Description
Our forests are experiencing profound transformations. Trees suffer from drought, extreme weather and as weakened as they are become suspect to destruents. These destruents are not parasitic – rather they speed up the inevitable process of change and provide the nurturing ground for other plants and ultimately a new generation of trees. The spaces in between are filled with various herbaceous and semi-shrubby plants. They cover the wounds that are left by falling trees, just like trees cover their own wounds with precious resins. Ferns, belladonna, enchanter’s nightshade and other flowering plants profit from the sun-lit spots that open up the dark forest roof when a tree dies. In these spaces majestic purple foxglove and different types of touch-me-not may show up in abundance, likewise thorny bramble vines may spread rapidly. Yet, among the dark bramble vine eventually new small trees will rise – protected among thorns. These transformative processes take years. They remind us that natural healing takes time.
