“Radha Juggernaut” Mandrake + Art

Description

This is a live mandrake (Mandragora officinarum) root that has been grown by me from seed and cared for and which has now called to me to go on its journey to a new home. It comes together with a live-like ink portrait (phytograph), created with india ink on coffee stained paper, which in addition has been imbued with the root’s juices and – on demand – soil obtained from a peculiar grave.

This root is named “Juggernaut”, following a suggestion by a dear colleague. In Indian religion a juggernaut is a temple wagon, also known as ratha. The word later became associated with something monstrous and unstoppable, probably due the fact that once the massive wagon was set into motion, it could not be stopped. This root appears massive (though the main body is just about 13 cm but there are lots of fine root tendrils, which is a sign of its health). It is currently florishing with lots of strong green leaves. I added the name Rhada, because it has also something very gentle and prosperous about it.

Over the years I have sent many mandrakes with their portraits to new homes and together we experienced wonders and transformations, all tied to these powerfull root allies. It is thus a tradition that we keep alive by fostering and caring for the mandrake.
