Description

This incense is dedicated to the second of the spring festivals. While the sun was reborn on the winter solstice and Imbolc announced the first glimpses of returning vegetation, the spring equinox is the solar feast day that marks the actual turning point and the victory of daylight over the night. Or, as some say, the sun now enters into an ecstatic dance with the moon.

Traditionally the start of spring is announced by the white flowers of the blackhtorn, painting snow white patterns across the stillen barren landscapes alongside fields and rural borders. On lit forests grounds bluebells and thimbleweed are rising towards the sun. The last animals are waking up from their winter slumber and the bees are out and about, in search for food and new nesting places. While some birds already started building their nests in trees, others do so now and breeding season is ultimately kicking off.

This incense blend is hence all about the rituals of spring: the celebration of the Vernal Equinox, Ostara/Easter, the Roman Veneralia and the time leading up to Beltaine, when nature is exploding below yet still holding back above. It is also the beginning of the garden season, which starts on March 17th = the feast day of St. Gertrude, who was known as a passionate gardener and features in a number of weather proverbs:

St. Gertrud schließt das Gartentörchen auf” (St. Gertrude opens the garden gate)

Gertraud führt die Kuh zum Kraut, das Ross zum Pflug, die Bienen zum Flug” (Gertrude leads the cattle to the grass, the horse to the plow and the bees to flight)

The incense smells of sweet spring flowers, yet with a hint of earthen breath, just a like a spring time walk through a sunlit forest. It contains fragrant ingredients that reference light (e.g. dammar), the spring season and Venus, such as apple, clary sage, dammar resin, lemon grass, myrtle, sweetgrass and sweet violets. Yellow flowering primrose (the ‘keys to heaven’) and amber resin evoke the light and fire of the sun. The return of vegetation and pollinators along with the increasing daylight, is represented by deeply aromatic bee propolis. Water mint and willow both connect this blend to the element of water, evoking batrachian and ophidian currents and point towards the opening rituals of the Western Throne.
